Work Motivation
We live in a world where there is immense competition in work and
the stress levels are shooting high. In such a situation even the
smallest mistakes can be detrimental to growth and your boss may
lose his/her temper over it. In the long run, it is seen as a
self-destructive activity because this is destroying the work
environment, which will lead to a downfall in productivity, which
will equate to losses.
Work motivation is extremely important because it will determine
the percentage of employee retention. Competition means that
organizations are vying for space and somewhere in between, most
organizations forget about their employees who are the most
susceptible to de-motivation. Secondly, if a competitor pays
double the salary then an employee will leave your organization
but on the other hand, if you are providing a motivating work
environment then the employee will think twice and 99% of the
times will reject the double salary offer.
Why is motivation so important in work? Motivation boosts
employees’ confidence and energizes the employees to take the
extra step. Why would someone work for more than eight hours if
the salary is not great and the work environment is worse? You can
only make people work if they are motivated enough otherwise they
will reach their saturation point, which will effect the overall
productivity.
There are several ways of motivating an employee or individual
within a specific work environment like:
Give an employee an extra coffee break and appreciate them for
their hard work and always be generous with your compliments but
don’t go overboard. This will make them feel good and boost their
confidence as well as motivate them to do better.
Group meetings are quite helpful as they will help people to open
up. There are certain employees, who can offer immediate solutions
to complex problems but are shy or feel nervous. You can ask them
to share their viewpoint in group meetings and again appreciate
their contribution in front of the entire group. It’s a great
feeling to be appreciated in front of 10 people.
Managers should always be accessible to their team and take care
of the fact that their team is always motivated. Managers have
powers using which they can provide incentives for high
performers, take the team out for a weekend holiday and do
activities that will keep the team together and provide a
motivating environment.
Every employee has their own learning curve and hence it is
important that you shouldn’t rush them or over pressurize them.
Instead the best thing to do is provide each individual a task
that is based on their qualifications, knowledge, skills and
experience. If an individual is from an account background but is
good at communication, then transfer him or her to customer
service or sales if necessary instead of relegating them to some
financial functions. This will solve a dual purpose: You will get
higher productivity and the employee will always be motivated
because he is doing what comes to him/her naturally.
